MONDAY 1/12/2015:
  • EQ:
  • What are some diseases/infections that are caused by bacteria?
    • Checked our plates.
    • Each student chose a specific disease/infection to research. We will spend the next two days in class researching the various diseases.
    • Students will create a WANTED poster on their specific disease. Please see attached/handout for details.
    • Wanted Posters due by: Tuesday, January 27.

FRIDAY 1/9/2015:

  • EQ:
    • How do bacteria reproduce?
  • We reviewed the homework from last night - Antibiotic resistance reading and 4 questions
  • Took notes on how bacteria reproduce and the resistance of some bacteria to antibiotics
  • Watched a quick clip on how bacteria reproduce
  • We also went around the school and swabbed an area. Plated that swabbing on a petri dish filled with agar. We had one swabbing that was plated with hand sanitizer and one swabbing that was plated without hand sanitizer. We will see on Monday if the hand sanitizer worked.






THURSDAY 1/8/2015:

  • EQ
    • What organelles are in a bacteria cell?
    • What do Bacteria look like?
  • We reviewed the shapes of bacteria (round, rod, spiral) and how to write a scientific name
  • We looked at bacteria using the microviewers lab 217





HOMEWORK: READ THE ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE ARTICLE AND ANSWER THE 4 QUESTIONS.



WEDNESDAY 1/7/2015:
  • EQ
    • What are the 3 shapes of bacteria?
    • How are Bacteria different from viruses?
  • We reviewed the keying bacteria worksheet from yesterday
  • We completed the back side of that worksheet and answered yes/no questions as to how bacteria and viruses are different/similar
  • We completed a graphing activity to determine how many bacteria reproduce over 5 hours, how bacteria/viruses decrease in number as temperature increases (that is why your body produces a fever).

HOMEWORK: WDYR tomorrow (10 points) - study terms: autotroph, heterotroph, unicellular, prokaryote, the three shapes of bacteria (rod, round, spiral), the kingdom and domain we are currently studying (Kingdom Eubacteria; Domain Bacteria)

TUESDAY 1/6/2015:
  • EQ:
    • What are the 3 shapes of bacteria?
    • What are the characteristics of organisms in Kingdom Eubacteria?

  • We took notes on the three types of bacteria and the characteristics of organisms in Kingdom Eubacteria
  • We used a dichotomous key to identify various bacteria
  • We wrote the Scientific names of bacteria

    • How do I use a dichotomous key?
  • We reviewed how to complete a dichotomous key using our classification notes.

  • Reviewed the classification of organisms using the first page of our note packet
